Artist Statement
The human figure and human emotions are the main subjects of my art – along with the painting itself.
My art synthesizes figuration, abstraction, emotionality and poetry as well as the technology of painting. Abstract decisions are brought to bear on forms of clear genesis.
The emotions conveyed vary from melancholy to ecstasy and from introverted solitude to joie de vivre. Dramatic baroque scenes are imbued with soft sexuality.
Intellectually, my work is based on a fascination with the human body and the human emotions that are so essential to human existence.
I work in a variety of media, mainly oils, and pay close attention to the process of art. The choice of media, the diversity of techniques, the use of brushes, the creation of surface textures – all contribute to a personal esthetic universe in which I seek to make formal discoveries. Because the physical and emotional dimensions of the human form are tools as well as subjects in my art, I tend to avoid landscapes and purely abstract composition.
When composing, I give rhythm and balance the same structure, regardless of whether the picture is figurative or nearly abstract. The rhythmic axes are of greatest importance.
For me, a picture is a picture. Whatever it may represent, it remains situated in art and esthetics. Its power comes from this world.
